Stir up Sunday
Sukie Read
How would you describe your role at H&J?
I have the best job as I work part time from my home in Wiltshire editing the website, as well as working on other writing projects such as putting together Patrick’s speeches for conferences and I also run traditional baking courses for other chefs at H&J.
Life before H & J
My first proper job was working in business research in the computer industry and from there I migrated into marketing and PR, initially with the same company and then for a US technology investment bank which I hated. I decided to take out a career development loan which enabled me to apply to Leith’s School of Food and Wine where I completed my diploma and launched myself into the world of cooking. After a stint working for a large catering company I joined Houston & Church where I met first Patrick and then Nathan and they haven’t managed to get rid of me since!
Why H & J?
They have integrity and enthusiasm and we share the same ideals of well-sourced ingredients, simple cooking and great service. In short, I believe in what they do and how they do it.
Why still H & J?
Why on earth would I go anywhere else – I have the perfect job.
Any exciting projects for this year?
Absolutely; I am getting married in May so am spending quite a lot of time worrying about flowers, marquees and praying for a warm, dry spring. Fortunately, H&J are doing the catering so that’s one thing I don’t need to be concerned about.
What about when you’re old & grey?
I would love to be self-sufficient for food; grow all my own fruit and vegetables, keep pigs, have a small herd of Dexter cattle and carry on with my goats and chickens. That and a good cellar of wine would keep me very happy.
When you’re not at work?
Well, the reason I work part time is because I have 3 dogs, 2 horses, 6 goats (although the 3 kids will be off to the abattoir soon!) and multitudinous chickens, all of which take up large chunks of my day. My husband-to-be travels a lot with his job so all the animals are my responsibility and it’s not as glamorous as it sounds – there is a lot of mucking out to be done every day!
And finally, tell us 3 facts that others at work may not know about you:
I have a degree in Geology, I do agility with my Jack Russell terrier, I used to play the violin in the Bath youth orchestra.
