Worldwide Wine Tour

For this month’s H&J social event, we decided to put an educational spin on the evening’s fun and frivolity with a fascinating tour around some of the wine regions of the world at Vinopolis, London’s wine tasting attraction. The group was 20 strong with a good mix of chefs, hospitality and front of house staff who were all keen to increase their general knowledge of this complex subject.

After an introduction to wine making which included facts on the history of wine, viticulture and vinification, we took a tour around the main wine producing regions of the world, both New and Old and learnt about the different grapes grown, the effects of climate, altitude and soil type on the final wine as well as some of the techniques, both ancient and modern, used in the process.

Everyone agreed that all this learning was thirsty work so next stop was the tasting room where we learnt how to swirl, slurp, gargle and spit like the experts! We were keen to put our newly acquired knowledge to the test as we compared Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and Bordeaux, Pinot Noir from Burgundy and Victoria and tried Malbec from Argentina and Barolo and Chianti from Italy. With pointers from our guide we were able to appreciate the huge differences in bouquet and flavour not only between wines made from different grapes, but also from those based on the same grape, but grown in different climates or produced or aged using alternative techniques.

All in all it was a great opportunity to gain more insight into this huge and varied area of expertise and to be able to take this knowledge back into our units and apply it with confidence.
