Oat and raisin biscuits

We Also Plan Parties…..

Tuesday December 16th 2008

As well as the regular day job of catering to hundreds of hungry solicitors, journalists, bankers et al, H&J has taken on a number of events over the last year which have really got our creative juices flowing.

The Royal Society Anniversary Dinner

Soon after gaining the contract for The Royal Society we were asked to present our suggestions for their Anniversary Dinner, a prestigious occasion bringing together fellows from all over the world to celebrate the birthday of the Society. Not satisfied with the usual buffet menus, we decided to create a Borough Market style concept, with stalls groaning with delicious “Best of British” produce including London cured salmon from the Chalk Farm Smokery, roast Hereford beef in baps, potted Morecambe Bay shrimps and Rinkoffs rye and sourdough breads.  Our cheesemonger, Rippon Cheeses, supplied a fantastic range of dairy produce from all over the British Isles and as the day also coincided with St Andrews Day, a ‘haggis, neaps and tatties’ stall seemed highly appropriate.  The day was a great success with overwhelmingly positive feedback from the fellows who enjoyed the style of the dinner, loved the food and were impressed by the difference we had made in such a short time.

VIP Event at Monitor Group

Monitor is a world-wide management consultancy group who are based in the stunning Michelin building in South Kensington.  When the son of their American-based Chief Executive and 24 of his classmates came over to the UK to row in the Henley Regatta we were called upon to throw them and their parents a welcome party.  This called for some creative thinking; smart enough canapés to impress the parents, but large enough quantities to satisfy 25 hungry teenaged rowers.

Monitor has a fabulous roof terrace, so we set up a satay grill outside and our chef produced skewers of prawns and scallops, Thai chicken satay, seasonal Kent asparagus and marinated halloumi with spicy red peppers.  Unfortunately the weather was the typical British summer mix of sunshine and showers so we were unable to take advantage of the terrace and serve the food outside.  Inside, away from the pouring rain, our waiting staff circulated with delicate canapés including artichoke tarte tatin, crayfish Caesar salad and terrine of foie gras on toasted brioche as well as more substantial mini beef burgers and mini fish and chips in cones made from The Rowing Times.  The centrepiece of the event was an elaborate giant ice sculpture of a swan, with English strawberries cascading from its wings!

A Private Screening of Sweeny Todd

This VIP private screening took place in Warner Brothers private cinema in Theobalds Street on behalf of RADA, with many famous ex-RADA alumni as guests including Alan Rickman, the current vice chairman.  Obviously to celebrate the film’s gruesome central character we had to include meat pies on the menu although, unlike Sweeney Todd’s, ours were made with steak and kidney!  The theme for the food was ‘British Snacks’ and the 150 guests were treated to homemade mini scotch eggs, potted shrimps on toast, our steak & kidney pies, mini rollmop herrings, parsnip soup shots, Stilton cheese straws, London smoked salmon on potato cakes, and sherry trifles.
