Small Suppliers Are Key To Our Business
Thursday July 27th 2006
At Harbour & Jones, we believe in building long-term relationships with excellent suppliers to ensure that our customers get the best possible food. We believe in using small companies who understand food, who aim to use local and seasonal produce and who will give us first rate customer service. In return, we pay fair prices promptly, are loyal and look after them.
We are very proud of our suppliers and would like to tell you more about some of them.
Union Coffee Roasters
This is an artisan coffee company bringing quality and responsible sourcing together. Working closely with the Ethical Trading Initiative, Jeremy Torz and Steven Macatonia trade directly with small family farms and co-operatives across the world, buying top quality Arabica beans which are then hand roasted in small batches at their roastery in East London.
Luscombe Organics
This is a family run business that has been making apple juice for 10 years and cider for 25. Luscombe drinks are made in Devon with just fresh ingredients; no preservatives, colorants or any unnatural additives. The recipes for the drinks are old family ones and they consistently win awards at the Great Taste and Organic Food ceremonies.
Matthew Stevens & Son
The only fishmonger to consistently appear in Rose Prince’s book “The Savvy Shopper”, Matthew buys much of his fish from the day boats that work out of St. Ives and other Cornish ports and makes sure that all the fish comes from sustainable sources.
Philip Rippon
Philip and his wife Karen run this shop in Pimlico which specialises in quality British cheeses as well as supplying a wealth of European cheeses. They have a huge amount of knowledge which they are happy to pass on to our chefs and are invaluable in giving tips on which cheeses are in season and at their best.
Honeybuns
Honeybuns make gorgeous cakes on a farm near Sherborne in Dorset. They use only the best ingredients and source locally where they can – for example they use free range eggs from the next door village and butter from Denhay Farm. They are particularly unusual in that all their cakes are wheat or gluten-free
Purbeck Ice Cream
Real ice cream made by passionate people in beautiful South Dorset. Peter & Hazel diversified from dairy farming when the introduction of milk quotas made the farm uneconomical. They started out maintaining their own herd and using the milk to make ice cream, but now buy in milk from surrounding farms, add only natural flavourings and produce wonderful flavours such as Honeycomb Hash, Strawberry & Champagne and (my favourite) Clotted Cream.
