H&J Wins St Paul’s Cathedral
Friday November 28th 2008

We are thrilled to announce that our bid for the public restaurants at St Paul’s Cathedral has been successful. This iconic London church, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, was built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed by the Great Fire of London and has been an important part of our skyline ever since. The win represents an exciting new direction for H&J as we have previously concentrated on the business and industry sector of contract catering.
We will be developing the menus in both the restaurant and the Cathedral café to reflect the best of British produce. This will mean sourcing local, seasonal ingredients, a concept already at the heart of our business, and cooking them simply and beautifully. The café will be a showcase for traditional British baking serving up such homemade delights as Richmond maids of honour, Wiltshire lardy cake, Chelsea buns and Yorkshire parkin. Award winning architects Wells Mackereth, well-known for their re-design of the Giraffe restaurants and Smiths of Smithfield, will be working with H&J to refurbish the restaurant area and help them to turn it into a destination within the Cathedral. The food offering in the restaurant will include a 2 course set-price lunch and a plate of the day with ingredients coming from nearby Borough and Spitalfields Markets.
“This is a fabulous opportunity for us and an exceptional place to start our diversification into concession catering,” said H&J Director, Patrick Harbour commenting on our first public dining contract. “We intend to change the perception of the quality of public restaurants by staying true to our core ideals of sourcing top-notch seasonal produce and serving imaginative, simply-cooked and delicious food.”
Mark McVay, Managing Director of St Paul’s Cathedral Enterprises Ltd said, “Harbour & Jones showed that they have incredible passion for food, for sustainable local sourcing and for environmental concerns and working within the community, all of which were factors that contributed to the success of their bid.”
