H&J Wins Gold Eggsellence Award
Thursday April 2nd 2009

Catering company Harbour & Jones has received an award that recognises its commitment to using only free range eggs throughout its business. The Eggsellence awards were set up by the Battery Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) to support British free range farmers and to highlight how important it is for consumers to take responsibility for what they eat.
Commenting on receiving the Gold award, Patrick Harbour, director of H&J said, “We set the company up over 5 years ago and insisted from the start that we only use free range eggs; not to create a selling point, but because we genuinely believe it is the right thing to do. We are tremendously proud of the way that our clients have responded to this and it delights us to help develop business for some of the smaller farmers out there.”
When H&J started working with BSkyB in Scotland 2 years ago they needed to prove that good welfare also made good business sense and so began the search for a local supplier who could sell them free range eggs at a price that could be afforded by all. The manager in Edinburgh discovered that he could buy free range eggs direct from a farmer in the Scottish borders at less than the cost of eggs from caged hens being supplied by their regular dairy. And because of the volumes being bought, they were even delivered for free. “This is a great example of why we do not restrict our sites to buying from a few large producers, but give them the opportunities to search for the best suppliers in their area,” said Patrick. “We have always believed that you do not have to compromise your ideals in order to balance your books.”
