Burn’s Night Celebrated in Style

Our latest H&J Social event and the first of many for 2007 coincided with the birthday of Scotland’s most revered poet, Rabbie Burns. Of course we couldn’t pass up on such an opportunity and all became honorary Scots for the evening, complete with tam o’shanters, red hair and the flag of St Andrew. A couple of brave souls even went as far as donning kilts, but I can’t reveal whether or not they were wearing the traditional Scottish undergarments!

Before supper got under way we were entertained by a number of people attempting to recite Burn’s poems in a version of Scot’s dialect that would have had the poor man turning in his grave.

Next was the competitive part of the night with Richard’s well-researched quiz on Scotland. In fact it was so well-researched that the majority of us were completely stumped by some of the questions. Who was King Malcolm anyway? In the future I think these quizzes may have to be compiled without the help of the Internet! Richard did also later admit that when he’d called the Scottish Tourist Board to check some of his answers they too were bewildered by a few of the questions!

Sadly we couldn’t find anyone able to pipe in the haggis so instead we sang it in with a beautiful rendition of “Flower of Scotland” – maybe not the traditional air, but lovely nonetheless. The haggis was accompanied by the classic bashed neeps and tatties and washed down with wee drams of whisky. This delicious meal was finished off with Mull of Kintyre cheddar, Lanark Blue sheep’s milk cheese and Inverloch goat’s cheese and some homemade shortbread. What a feast and a huge thank you to Richard and the team for cooking for us all.
