A Busy Start to the Year

Wednesday July 4th 2007

We have been kept busy so far with some exciting new wins in the first 6 months of 2007. March saw the opening of our operation at Catlin, a global insurance company, which last year merged with Wellington Underwriting plc and decided to put the catering contract out to tender. Catlin was impressed by our ability to offer a bespoke service and particularly by our desire to use small independent suppliers. Our flexible approach meant that we could happily take on additional suppliers who were important to the chef, an attitude that certainly helped win his support. We now offer a hospitality and fine dining service at Catlin to 700 people in the London Underwriters Building in the City.

Our next win was Markel, another City-based insurance company who again were keen to appoint a niche player when looking for a new caterer. Our capacity for creative thinking, along with our great food and exceptional people helped us gain this prestigious hospitality site and since April we have been catering for 300 brokers and clients.

At the beginning of June we opened at Channel 5 in Covent Garden and are now catering for over 500 staff in The Atrium restaurant at the top of the building. By the start of July we had increased sales by 40% with a combination of new menus, exciting retail products, great coffee and cheerful, motivated staff. We’ve even managed to hold a few BBQs in the roof garden despite the atrocious weather.

2007 has also seen us expanding our involvement with BSkyB and we are now acting as consultants for their Scottish operations at Livingston and Dunfermline. This has meant new challenges for H&J in sourcing local Scottish suppliers as our ethos dictates that we do not rely on national distributors. We will be spending the rest of this year revamping the coffee bars, introducing an increased range of healthier dishes, training and developing the kitchen team and launching new menus in both sites.
