Stir up Sunday
James Millard, Telemarketing Manager
Describe your typical day
I don’t have a typical day as such, as my role can be quite varied. I could be making phone calls trying to generate new business or I could be helping to put together a tender document, or I may even be out at a site helping prepare for a site visit!
Have you always been in sales?
No! My background is very much on the operational side of the business and I was manager at the British Bankers Association for a couple of years before joining the sales team.
So what persuaded you to move?
Sales was never something that I had even thought about, but when Nathan offered me the opportunity to join his team, I wanted to accept the challenge. As it is, I took to it like a duck to water and haven’t looked back.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part is working within a great team who are more like family than work colleagues. Another great part is gaining a new contract after going through a long full tender process.
And the worst part?
Whenever somebody hangs up the phone on me whilst I am making a sales call!
Life before H & J
After finishing college, where I studied hospitality and catering management, my first job was with Marriott Hotels and I then moved into contract catering, working for Avenance and Baxter Storey at various sites across London.
Why H&J?
The first interview I had with H&J I was unfortunately not the right candidate for the job advertised, but Patrick liked me and called me when another position became available which made me feel very wanted.
Why still H&J?
As I have mentioned before they really are like a family and stick to their values. Soon after I had started with H&J, Nathan said to me that he would like me to work alongside him as the business grew and 3 years on here I am in exactly that position.
What about when you’re old and grey?
My dream is to own a small hotel or B&B somewhere in the South West.
What do you do when you’re not working?
Football is a big passion of mine; I am a fully qualified Level 1 football coach and the resident manager of the H&J football team. We play regularly every Monday evening and have had some success in local leagues. I also hold a season ticket at West Ham United (unfortunately someone has to!)
